First and foremost, our hearts go out to those physically, financially, and emotionally impacted by mental health stressors. Two viruses have swept through our community for too long, already: coronavirus and fear. The impacts are statistically proven to have degraded our mental health, marriages, and the entire landscape of work:life balance.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you over the last four years. Nothing compares to the face-to-face camaraderie we share in the studio. You are all great, loving, and healthy souls yearning to breathe free. We welcome each opportunity to help ease the suffering by Re-building our immunity and Strengthening our community.
We have missed you all, especially our first responders and medical professionals who have been serving on the front lines of the fight. We know that you have missed us, too, and we are so blessed by your thoughtful words of encouragement that you have sent our way. Your self-giving service and compassion a true testament of your character, and in keeping with the highest ideals of our humble yoga studio. Please know that there were days when your short notes to us have made such a positive difference. We can't wait to thank you in person!
Your health is our purpose!
If you've read our reviews dating back to when we opened in 2019 (CLICK HERE), you'll begin to understand that cleanliness has been part of our yoga practice since ever since. We believe it is another form of moving meditation. This was in our practice prior to this outbreak, and will be part of our practice after the cases subside. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika prescribes a series of cleansing techniques before even considering practicing postures. These traditional techniques are still used today, and are considered just as important as the postures and breathing exercises.
Since this is a unique situation, we would like to take the opportunity to provide insights into this element of our yoga practice. Here are the basics that are as easy as A, B, C!
Avoid close contact.
- Don't stay in the same room or vehicle with people who are sick.
- Wear a mask; especially if you have allergies, or if you are coughing & sneezing.
- Respect the placement of other mats in the studio. No need to touch someone else's mat.
- Wash your hands with soap & water; especially after you've been in public, and every time you blow your nose, cough, or sneeze.
- If soap & water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
- Don't touch your face with unwashed hands.
- Avoid touching high-touch surfaces with bear hands. This includes the grocery store & gas stations, and anywhere you use a credit card or bank machine to process payments. Use a clean tissue or gloves if you must touch something.
- Wash your butts before & after class. We realize time constraints might prevent the shower before class, but you will feel the difference if you have the time.
- We clean & disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes the yoga mats & blocks in studio, along with all the common stuff like toilet seats & door handles.
- Don't wait for surfaces to look dirty, clean them: Use soap & water prior to using a disinfectant.
- Take care of your own yoga mats & props. They are part of your practice & we encourage you to respect them as an expression of your practice.
For our members, you will recall our Phased approach to closing due to COVID-19. For re-opening, we will follow same phases, but in reverse. Not all gyms & studios share our disciplined practice, so we feel it's worth mentioning a few elements of our healthy & hygiene practices. For those who may be new to practicing with Sol, we've provided an outline of the general precautions we employ at our studio:
- 100% fresh & filtered air for occupied spaces (no recirculation of air is permitted)
- "Close contact" is a measure of three factors (quantity, duration, and density) that we closely monitor & manage:
- Limited class size (quantity of potential contacts);
- Limited class duration (duration of potential contact);
- Proximity of yoga mats to maintain safe separation (density of contacts);
- Elimination of hands-on adjustments to correct improper alignment;
- Pre-class health screening of employees and students (do not come to the studio if your temperature > 99.5F);
- Pre- and post-class cleaning regimens;
- Bring your own yoga mat, or buy one at the studio;
- Use of blocks, straps, and any other props will be limited;
- NEVER blow your nose into the hand towels or traction towels (you are encouraged to place your box of tissues next to your yoga mat if you are prone to runny noses, coughing, or sneezing);
- Locker rooms will be limited to one person at a time in order to allow for cleaning between uses.
As the CDC warns, don’t fall for claims about remedies that will immunize or cure you of this disease. First & foremost, if you're at home and feeling a little (or more than a little) overwhelmed, try meditation. Even the CDC recommends it!
There is a lot that you can still do to protect yourself and your health. There is also enough evidence to support the benefits of exercise, nutrition, meditation, and mindful breathing exercises. We've posted information about all three of those in our [y]oga ("why yoga") page.
